Bridge Bike Lane
Winter riders who use the MacDonald Bridge on a regular basis have probably encountered a closed bike lane from time to time. Generally they find out the hard way, that is, on their way to work.
Why does the bridge bike lane close?
The Bridge Commission's decision is based on wind speeds on the bridge. Whenever there are three sequential wind gusts within a 10 minute period of more than 55 km/h they start to monitor the bridges. If there are then three sequential wind gusts within a 10 minute period of 75-85 km/h, the decision is made to close the bridge to pedestrians and cyclists.
So what to do when you encounter a closed bike lane?
From the Dartmouth side you can pick up the shuttle in the parking lot next to the Macdonald bridge administration building. Or, if you get to the bridge and the lane is closed simply go to the control room (it's on the pedestrian side) and say you are here for the shuttle.
If you want to check to see if the lane is closed before leaving home you can call the control room at 463-2478.
For more information on the bridge, contact the Halifax Dartmouth Bridge Commission.
